Two Eagles Earn MAC Athlete of the Week Awards

Distance runner Baldvin Magnusson and thrower Taige Bryant earn conference honors
CLEVELAND, Ohio. (EMUEagles.com) - After a strong opening meet to start the season, the Eastern Michigan University track & field program saw two competitors earn Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Week honors in junior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) and graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial), announced the MAC today, Dec. 9.
Magnusson was dubbed Men's MAC Track Athlete of the Week for the fourth time in his career, after his performance in the 5000m race last weekend at the GVSU Holiday Open, Dec. 3, hosted by Grand Valley State University. In his first indoor 5000m race since 2020, the junior finished second with a strong time of 13:41.39 in the first heat, over 10 seconds faster than the previous record at the Kelly Family Sports Center. Additionally, the time ranks second in EMU history and 20th in the country.
Bryant picked up the Men's MAC Field Athlete of the Week for the third time at EMU, winning the weight throw invite at the same meet. The Edmond, Okla. native crushed his previous-best weight throw of 21.87m with a launch of 22.56m to set the school record and take first place. The 22.56m toss topped junior Newlyn Stephenson's (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) 22.28m performance set last year at the Akron Quad Meet, Jan. 15. Moreover, the school-record throw is the best in the country so far in the young season.
The Eagles will have over a month off to train and recover, with the next meet coming Jan. 8, 2022 for the Wolverine Invite. The meet will take place in Ann Arbor, Mich., hosted by the University of Michigan.
