ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University track & field program opened up its season with a bang at the Grand Valley State University's Holiday Open, tonight, Dec. 3. Inside the Kelly Family Sports Center, the Eagles earned 22 top-three finishes and saw one competitor set a school record.
"It was a strong start to our indoor season," said Director/Head Coach Sue Parks. "We still have a number of athletes to add to the lineup but it was great to get some early marks in. We're super proud of Taige Bryant for setting a new school record. His incredible work ethic continues to pay off. We'll take the momentum from today and continue to build on it when we get back to competing in January."
Graduate student Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) crushed his previous-best weight throw of 21.87m with a launch of 22.56m to set the school record and take first place in the event. The 22.56m toss tops senior Newlyn Stephenson's (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) 22.28m performance set last year at the Akron Quad Meet, Jan. 15. Also making a splash in the throwing department was junior Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield South) who took first in the open weight throw competition with a mark of 16.65m.
Senior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) impressed on the track, partaking in his first indoor 5000m race since 2020. The harrier finished second with a strong time of 13:41.39 in the first heat which is over 10 seconds faster than the previous record at the Kelly Family Sports Center, and ranks second in EMU history.
Eastern's sprinters also had a great showing with six top-five finishes. In the 60m dash finals, sophomore Kaleb Simpson (Bexley, Ohio-St. Charles Preparatory) captured the event crown in 6.81 while junior Kilani Harvey (Orlando, Fla.-Jones (Highland C.C.)) rounded out the top-five with a personal-best clip of 7.62. Harvey finished runner-up in the 200 with a time of 25.19. Seniors Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello) and Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Ann Arbor Pioneer) went 1-2 in the 400, crossing the finish line in 56.14 and 57.51, respectively.
Freshman Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich.-Cadillac) clocked in at 2:13.93 in the 800m race for a win in her first-ever collegiate track meet. The 2:13.93 time is better than any indoor 800 time run by a member of the women's team last season.
The Green and White dominated the jumps, as senior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) won the high jump (1.69m), senior Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) took first in the long jump (5.63m), and graduate student Alisha St. Louis (D'abadie, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Francois Girls College (Johnson C. Smith)) captured the triple jump title (11.84m).
The women's team finished first overall with a whopping 140.70 points while the men's team finished second with 92.20 points.
