Complete Release.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) - Recognized for success on and off the field, Eastern Michigan University football junior wide receiver Dylan Drummond (Cleveland, Ohio-Cuyahoga Heights) and senior center Mike Van Hoeven (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) earned 2021 Academic All-District honors, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today, Nov. 18. EMU was one of just two Mid-American Conference programs to have multiple representatives on the all-district teams.
Van Hoeven – who was a 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-American, one of just three in program history, becomes the first Eastern Michigan football student-athlete to be recognized four times in a career (2018-21). Meanwhile, Drummond is the first EMU wide receiver to collect the accolade since Blake Banham did it in 2018.
One of the most reliable offensive lineman in the Mid-American Conference, Van Hoeven is the anchor for the EMU scoring unit. The team's center, Van Hoeven has started all 11 games for the Green and White this season, helping the offense to impressive levels of the success in 2021.
As a unit, EMU has scored 45 total touchdowns, and leads the conference with a 32.9 points per game scoring average. A key in both the pass and run game, Van Hoeven has helped provide the pocket for senior quarterback Ben Bryant, who is in the midst of one of the best seasons in EMU history, having already thrown for 2,700 yards. Additionally, Bryant is on pace to secure the second-best season completion percentage (69%) at EMU in the modern statistical era (1998-Pres.), a statistic Van Hoeven and his offensive line have played a major role in. The EMU offense is on pace to complete the most single season passes in its history, ranks second in the conference in third down completion percentage (45%), third in fourth down conversions (65%). As a unit, the EMU offense has put together three games 200+ rushing yards, and six games with more than 300 yards through the air. Additionally, the EMU offensive line has only allowed 25 total quarterback hurries in 2021.
Drummond has been one of the most productive scoring threats on the EMU roster this season. The team's leader in touchdown receptions (6), he has hauled in 54 passes for 616 yards this year for EMU. His reception yards are already a career-best mark, while one two more receptions will set a new standard for the Cleveland native. This season, he is averaging a career-best 4.9 receptions per game to the tune of a career-standard 11.4 yards per catch. Additionally, his 56 yards per game receiving is also a career-high. Drummond brought in a career-best nine receptions (tied for the second most on the team), for 73 yards against Ohio, Nov. 9.
The 2021 Academic All-District® Football Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes football honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
District 5 consists of all FBS and FCS Division I programs in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. Nominees must be a starter or significant contributor to the team while carrying at least a 3.3 grade point average.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early July.
