Darion Spottsville and Bryce McBride were voted to serve as captains
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program and first-year Head Coach Stan Heath announced this year's captains in senior Darion Spottsville (Phoenix, Ariz.-Shadow Mountain (South Mountain C.C.)) and junior Bryce McBride (Jackson, Tenn.-Southside (Dyersburg State C.C.)) today, Oct. 25. The captains were chosen by a team vote.
"I'm excited to announce Darion and Bryce will serve as our captains as selected by their teammates," Heath said. "Once we began summer workouts and through official practices, both returning players have set an example of hard work, accountability, and made a tremendous effort to connect our team together. Both are deserving and will represent EMU very well."
Spottsville appeared in 17 games, making six starts last season. He averaged 5.2 points per game and ranked third on the team with 32 assists (1.9 apg). The Phoenix, Ariz. native tallied four double-digit scoring performances, including a season-high 12 points in the 2020-21 season opener at No. 13 Michigan State, Nov. 25. Spottsville shot 66 percent from the field for 10 points against Adrian, Dec. 9, and dished out a season-high four helpers at Kent State, Feb. 20. Additionally, the senior is a back-to-back NABC Honors Court honoree.
"A leader isn't someone who forces others to make him stronger," Spottsville said. "A leader is someone willing to give his strength to others so that they may have the strength to stand on their own."
McBride was Eastern's primary point guard in 2020-21, starting in 15 games. He averaged 13.7 points per game which ranked second on the team. The guard led the Eagles in assists, with a 2.6 assist-per-game average, in his first season donning the Green and White. Additionally, the junior tallied 13 double-figure scoring performances, including a career-high 25 points against Adrian, Dec. 9. McBride boasted an 83.7 free throw percentage, which was good for seventh in the Mid-American Conference.
"Leadership isn't a title," McBride said. "It's a bond you create with others to help them get better."
Eastern Michigan will play two exhibition games prior to the start of the 2021-22 season. The Eagles travel to Rochester, Mich. to challenge the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies in a charity game Thursday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. Then, the Green and White will host Goshen College Friday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. before kicking off the season at Indiana, Nov. 9.
