Volleyball Falls to Miami in Series Opener

Samantha Basham recorded her second career double-double with 19 kills and 16 digs
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team took the first set, but couldn't hold on as it lost in four sets (25-17, 28-30, 16-25, 18-25) to Miami University Thursday, Oct. 14, inside the Convocation Center.
The loss dropped Eastern Michigan's record to 7-11 overall and 2-5 in MAC play.
The Eagles were led by a double-double performance from sophomore Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio-Newark Catholic), who registered 19 kills and 16 digs. Redshirt sophomore Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ontario-Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) also added 10 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, sophomore Kamryn Stilwell (Parma, Ohio-Padua Franciscan) chipped in for EMU with 22 digs to go with nine blocks from Chase.

» Eastern Michigan had four players with double-figure digs in Stilwell, Basham, junior Mackenzie Garis (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge), sophomore Jayden Otto (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge).
» Freshman Bella Hommes (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) ad Otto both had a match-high three aces in the loss.
» Chase recorded a match-high nine blocks (3-6).
» Basham registered her second career double-double with 19 kills and 16 digs
» Eastern Michigan served up six aces on the way to a first-set victory.
» Basham had a team-high 19 kills for Eastern Michigan.
» Eastern Michigan got a match-high 22 digs from Stilwell.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Eagles took control of the set-one lead at 3-2 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-17. Eastern Michigan opened up its biggest lead, eight points, to finish off the set. Eastern Michigan also supplemented their offense with six aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | Eastern Michigan dropped the second set 30-28 to even the match 1-1. The Eagles fell in a close second set, losing in a stanza that was tied 12 times and had six lead changes.
SET 3 | Eastern Michigan then dropped its second consecutive set, falling behind in the match, two sets to one. The Eagles fell in a tough set, 25-16. Eastern Michigan trailed by as many as nine points as Miami (OH) grabbed the advantage for good at 11-10 in a set that was tied up three times before the RedHawks took over the lead.
SET 4 | Eastern Michigan lost the fourth set and the match, falling 25-18. The Eagles trailed by as many as seven points as Miami (OH) grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 and Eastern Michigan wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up 13 times before the RedHawks took over in the second half of the stanza.

» Eastern Michigan will continue the two-match series with Miami Friday, Oct. 15 inside the Convocation Center. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
