The Eagles saw singles wins from Pelayo and Pommiers
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team fell to Youngstown State, 5-2, Sunday, Jan. 31, inside the YSU Tennis Center.
"Today things didn't fall our way," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "Youngstown State played very tough up and down the lineup, in both singles and doubles. This weekend, we saw many positives and some things we need to work on in order to get better next week. Luisa and Emma-Lou did a great job to get us a couple of points, and the No. 2 double played well again today."
The Eagles No. 2 doubles pairing of redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) and redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School) won its match, 6-4. Despite that performance, the Green and White was unable to earn the doubles point, as Youngstown State won at the No.1 and No.3 spots, respectively.
Moving to singles play, it was redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sur-I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) who secured a point for Eastern first, besting the competition 6-1 and 6-4 in back-to-back sets. Redshirt junior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes) earned EMU another point, as she won her match in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2.
Despite positive performances, the Eagles ultimately came up short against the Penguins, 5-2
The Green and White will be back in action Friday, Feb. 5 at the travel to the University of Dayton, with the start time to be determined. As always, to stay up to date with Eastern Michigan tennis, go to EMUEagles.com or follow us on Twitter (@EMUEaglesTennis) and Instagram (@EMU_Tennis).
