CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team started the season 1-0 in Cleveland, Ohio, defeating Cleveland State University 4-3, Saturday, Jan. 30.
"It was really great to start the season with a win. It's ironic that it was the exact same way we ended the season last year," said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "We got dominant performances from the No.2 doubles, as well as, Luisa, Emma-Lou, and Julia in the singles competition. We had a very gutsy come-from-behind win at the No.3 doubles spot that really made all the difference in the match."
Starting the day, the Eagles claimed crucial doubles point with wins from redshirt freshman Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) and redshirt junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Aldappa Matriculation School) at the No. 2 spot, as well as redshirt sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin) and redshirt freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire-sure-I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) at the No. 3 spot. The pairings won their sets, 6-2 and 7-5, respectively.
In the solo matchups, the Green and White secured a point first from Pommiers in the No. 5 spot, winning 6-2 and 6-1, respectively, in consecutive sets. Piatek won Eastern's next point at the No. 6 spot, 6-1 and 6-3 in her two sets. Finally, it was redshirt junior Luisa Pelayo (Porto, Portugal-Colegio Cebes) securing the final point and victory for EMU, besting the competition 6-0 and 6-2 in back-to-back sets in the No. 3 spot. The Eagles claim the day, besting the Vikings, 4-3.
Eastern Michigan now travels to Youngstown State University to play the Penguins tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 31. The action is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. inside the YSU Tennis Center in Youngstown, Ohio.
