– Hard work and dedication has paid off for Eastern Michigan University volleyball junior Mackenzie Garis (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge) as she earned a scholarship, Head Coach Darcy Dorton announced last week.

"Getting a scholarship has been something I have worked for these last three years at EMU," said Garis. "I can't thank my coaches, teammates, and family for always believing in me and pushing me to be my best. All of the hard work has paid off and I am so thankful."

The defensive specialist appeared in 26 matches, including five starts, during the 2019 season. Garis averaged 2.16 digs per set and tallied 17 service aces for the Eagles. The Crystal Lake, Ill. native ranked fourth on the team with 166 total digs and posted a career-high 19 digs twice last season (vs. Ball State, Oct. 12; at Bowling Green, Oct. 19). Garis, a secondary education major, also earned a spot on the 2019 Academic All-MAC team.

Eastern Michigan finished the 2019 season with an 11-17 overall record and posted a 6-10 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Dorton will begin her second season at the helm of the program.

The Eagles will begin the shortened 2021 spring season Thursday, Jan. 22, at Kent State. EMU will only play 22 matches against conference opponents this year.
