Total ranks second among all football programs in the Mid-American Conference
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The NCAA released its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) figures for the four-year period from 2015-16 and 2018-19 today, May 19, and once again the Eastern Michigan University football program showed marked improvement in-and-out of the classroom.
Eastern posted a multi-year APR of 976, the second-best figure among all football programs in the Mid-American Conference. The team climbed six points from a 970 last year. This year's 976 mark tops the previous team record set just a season ago.
Furthermore, the team also posted the highest single-year rate in program-history. After a 972, Eastern notched a 987 to better the previous record of 982 set in 2016-17. The single-year tally also ranks second among the 12-member schools.
"We are very proud of setting all-time highs for both single-year and multi-year APR scores," added Head Coach Chris Creighton. "Retention, eligibility and graduation rates are obviously extremely important in measuring the overall health of a program. We are hungry to get even better."
Overall, the program has improved by more than 80 points since the NCAA's first release in 2004-05.
APR is a gauge of every team's academic performance at a given point in time. Points are awarded on a semester-by-semester basis for eligibility, retention and graduation of scholarship student-athletes. "1000" is considered a perfect score. Sports that fail to reach the "cut point" (930) can be penalized with the loss of scholarships, practice restrictions and post-season bans. The APR data released today is a cumulative figure taken from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years.
