Baseball Swept in The Queen City

3/8/2020 4:23:00 PM | Baseball

EMU fell, 14-2, at Cincinnati today, March 8

CINCINNATI, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – After dropping the first two games of its three-game set with the University of Cincinnati, March 7, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team could not change its tune in the final meeting between the two squads as it fell 14-2 today, March 8, at Marge Schott Stadium.

The Green and White's Queen City woes leave Eastern (1-13) still searching for its first victory since it beat Austin Peay State University to open the season, Feb. 15.

Both sides of ball struggled as Eastern manufactured just two runs on six hits in the contest. No Eagle was able to record a multi-hit game, a trend that carried through all three games of the series. EMU finished the weekend with just 16 total hits, which is less than the total amount of runs that the Bearcats were able to produce (35).

Junior college transfer Daniel Warkentin (Leamington, Ontario-Leamington District (Parkland)) finished the weekend as the Eagles' most consistent hitter during the series. He was the only Eagle to notch a hit in all three contests. The first-year Eagle tied for the team lead with two RBI's on the weekend as well. Junior Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) had the other pair of runs-batted-in.

The freshmen pitching duo of Trevor House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) and Cameron Wagoner (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) combined for the best pitching outings of the afternoon. Each newcomer threw a clean inning, helping EMU to hold Cincy scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Junior Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) was solid in his start as well. While he allowed three earned runs, he blanked the Bearcats in the first three frames of the contest.

EMU did score an unearned run in the eighth inning of the game, but could not produce its first earned run until the ninth. Redshirt junior Mike Monahan (Saline, Mich.-Saline) got it done when he knocked a single in his final at-bat of the game. Although the hit got EMU its second run of the day, it was far from enough to mount a comeback against UC, who finished off the Eagles to secure a 14-2 win and the series sweep.

EMU is back in action next when it heads to Manhattan, Kan. for a three-game set with Kansas State University. The series will run Friday-Sunday, March 13-15. Game one is slated for 6 p.m. CT on Friday.
