PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team concluded its spring break trip to the Sunshine State with a single game against Northeastern University today, March 1, at North Charlotte Regional Park. Despite scoring the game's first run and taking an early 1-0 lead, the Eagles ultimately fell, 17-7.

Despite the tough loss, EMU (1-10) saw positive offensive production from junior Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), who led the team with three hits, and tied for a team-best two RBIs. Redshirt junior Mike Monahan (Saline, Mich.-Saline) also registered two RBIs on the day, a new single-game and season career-high for the Saline, Mich. native.

Senior John Holt (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and junior Holden Cook (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Casady) offered the best performances on the mound. Each surrendered just one hit in their respective outings (1.0 innings each), and did not allow a run. They were the only two EMU pitches, of six who pitched, to keep Northeastern off the board.

The Green and White needed little time to score the game's initial run as the Eagles were able to pick up one run on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. EMU used three-consecutive two-out singles, off the bats of senior Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), and juniors Daniel Warkentin (Leamington, Ontario-Leamington District (Parkland)) and Nate Jones to produce the run. Ultimately, it was Nate Jones' single that produced the RBI.

After the one-run first, Northeastern hit its stride on the mound. The Huskies allowed just one Eagle hit over the next four innings, which helped NE to burst out to a 9-1 lead after five.

Undeterred, EMU again found success in the sixth inning. After Nick Jones and Warkentin reached via a fielding error and hit-by-pitch, respectively, it was Nate Jones who came through again, knocking his second single of the day to score his brother while allowing Warketin to advance to third. Warketin scored moments later when Monahan produced a sacrifice fly to right field. Redshirt junior Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community) notched EMU's second hit of the inning when he lined a shot off the pitcher's ankle, however the Eagles were unable to capitalize. All-in-all, EMU successfully closed the score differential to six, 9-3.

Despite the sixth-inning spark of offensive momentum from EMU, Northeastern continued to make the Eagles pay on the mound. The Huskies quickly scored three runs in the top of the seventh to once again stretch their lead to nine runs, 12-3, before eventually making the EMU deficit two touchdowns, 17-3.

The Eagles continued to show fight through the remainder of the game. Monahan picked up his second RBI, this time via a double down the left field line in the eighth inning, to give EMU its fourth run. EMU's ninth inning including taking advantage of three fielding errors by the Huskies, and a timely hit from junior Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick), which allowed it to put three additional runs on the board and close the gap to 17-7. Despite the effort, the Huskie lead proved too large, as Northeastern closed the game out to secure the 10-run win.

Eastern is set to return to the Mitten State before heading to Ohio for a three-game series at the University of Cincinnati, March 6-8. For the most up-to-date on all things EMU baseball, visit EMUEagles.com and continue to follow the team on social media, at @EMU_Baseball.
