Eagles Head to Notre Dame to Compete in Meyo Invitational

Junior sprinter Michaela Nelms won the 400-meter dash at last season’s meet
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team returns to competition at the Meyo Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8, inside the Loftus Sports Center.
The Eagles captured one event title at last year's meet, Feb 1-2, 2019, when current junior Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central) won the 400-meter dash with a then-personal-best time of 54.40 seconds. Meanwhile, current senior co-captain Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) finished fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.55 seconds.
The Green and White resume their indoor schedule after winning five events at the Can-Am International at Bob Parks Track inside Bowen Field House, Jan. 25. Mason came just 0.04 seconds shy of matching her own meet record in the 60-meter dash, as she claimed first prize with a season-best time of 7.55. Additionally, sophomore Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peters) earned the 60-meter hurdles crown with a personal-best mark of 8.63, while sophomore Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) and redshirt freshman Brenna Cavanaugh (Bentleyville, Pa.-Bentworth) finished third and fourth with times of 8.69 and 8.78, respectively.
EMU also clinched the top two spots in the 200-meter sprint, as junior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) won the event with a time of 24.67 seconds, while senior Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)) was right behind in second place at 24.92. Gibson's mark was 0.03 ticks away from the meet record held by Nelms. Elsewhere, sophomore Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.) clinched first place in the 400-meter dash as she crossed the finish line in 56.34. The Eagles ran the fastest 4x200-meter relay at the Can-Am International with a time of 1:41.12, before both of Eastern's 4x400-relay squads finished in the top-three overall with times of 3:51.97 and 3:58.70, respectively.
Field events are scheduled to get underway Friday at 4 p.m., while running events will begin at 4:30 p.m. The meet will resume Saturday morning with running events starting at 9:45 a.m., while field events are expected to resume at 10:30 a.m.
