Men’s Track and Field Finishes Second at 2020 MAC Indoor Championships

Four Eagles earn First-Team All-MAC accolades, while seven collected Second-Team honors

AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team finished a strong second at the 2020 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a team score of 142 points Saturday, Feb. 29, inside Stile Athletics Field House.

Four Eagles combined to earn six individual titles at the conference meet, as, redshirt juniors Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) and Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Arlington, Va.-Fishburne Military), junior Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf), and sophomore Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) all garnered First-Team All-MAC honors. 

"I am so proud of this team for their great competitive effort the entire Championship," said head coach John Goodridge following the conference meet.

Day won both events in which he competed, defending his mile run title with a time of 4:06.86, before claiming first prize in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:51.38. One day after winning the 5,000-meter event, Magnusson continued his dominance in the distance events by winning the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:18.44, while placing fifth in the mile with a time of 4:10.10.  Newcomer Wilho Hautala (Heinola, Finland-Lahden Lyseo) placed fourth in the 3,000-meter race at 8:24.84, and sixth in the mile as he crossed the finish line in 4:12.94

Meanwhile, Findlay captured the 60-meter hurdles title with a time of 7.89 seconds, while sophomore Payne Wylie (Saskatchewan, Canada-Colonsay School) finished eighth with a time of 8.42. Additionally, senior Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage) ranked sixth in the 60-meter sprint with a mark of 6.95

Junior Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) earned bronze in the 400-meter race with a time of 47.38 seconds and fourth overall in the 200-meter dash at 21.30, while freshman Frankie Grey (Brentwood, N.Y.-Brentwood) was fourth in the race with a time of 48.43. EMU's 4x400-meter relay quartet wrapped up the meet in second place as it crossed the finish line in 3:13.00.

In the field events, Sallah-Mohammed followed up his long jump title by placing second in the triple jump with a distance of 15.50 meters. Junior Skyler Lester  (Marietta, Ga.-Marietta) was the runner-up in the high jump with a mark of 2.06 meters, while fellow junior Chukwusom Enekwechi (Valley Stream, N.Y.-Jamaica Gateway to the Sciences (Monroe College)) finished second in the shot put with a toss of 17.08 meters.

Eastern will now wait to see if any student-athletes will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., March 13-14.
