Shugarman Wins 500 Free Title on Day Two of MAC Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team returned to action for day two of the Mid-American Conference Championships today, Feb. 27, and witnessed junior Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego) win her first career MAC title at the University at Buffalo Alumni Arena Pool. As a team, the Eagles moved up one spot and sit in third place with 178 points. The University of Akron continues to lead the field with 295 points.

Claiming her first individual MAC title, Shugarman earned an NCAA 'B' Cut, as well as set a new Alumni Arena Pool record with a 4:44.51 swim in the 500 yard freestyle. Her time now ranks second all-time in program history. The junior also won the preliminary heat of the event, securing her spot in the finals with a time of 4:48.70.

Also in the 500 free, freshman Savanna Mouat (Tecumseh, Ontario-All Saints) posted a career-best 4:49.64 mark to win the B final, a mark that bested five of the eight times posted in the A final.

In the 200 yard individual medley, senior Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) took fourth place in both the preliminary and final rounds. Setting a season-best time with a 2:01.58 showing in the prelims, the senior shattered that standard and set a new lifetime-best mark with a 2:00.74 time in the finals, which is also good for second all-time in program history.

Eastern saw three divers claim top-five finishes in 1-meter diving. Junior Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green) took the bronze with a score of 278.07. Senior Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) finished fourth with a 273.96 mark, and junior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) ended in fifth place with a score of 263.01.

The MAC Championships continue tomorrow, Feb. 28, with preliminaries beginning at 10:30 a.m. 3-meter diving preliminaries will commence at 12:30 p.m., and finals for both swimming and diving will start at approximately 6:30 p.m. Live stats will be available via MeetMobile, and a live stream will be available.
