Swim and Dive in Third Place After Three Days of Competition at the MAC Championships

Eastern saw six swimmers in the A finals across four events
BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team ended the third day of the Mid-American Conference Championships, Feb. 28, in third place with 312 points. For the third consecutive day, the University of Akron leads the field with 524 points.
Highlighting the day for Eastern was senior Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South), who finished runner-up in the 100 yard backstroke with a season-best time of 53.49. This ties the senior's best finish at the MAC Championships in the same event, after taking second place in 2018.
Three divers earned their spots in the 3-meter diving finals. In the preliminaries, junior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) claimed third place with a score of 298.44, followed by senior Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo), who scored 286.02 and finished in fifth place. Rounding out the Eagles that will compete for the title tomorrow was junior Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green), who took seventh place with a score of 276.45.
Adding strong performances for the Eastern was junior Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley), who was the only member of the Green and White to compete in the A finals for two events. Claiming sixth place and recording career-best times in both races, Staver clocked in at 54.49 in the 100 yard butterfly finals and 54.89 in the 100 yard backstroke finals.
Junior Elli Machado (Reading, Pa.-Exeter Township) was the lone Eagle in either of the final heats of the 100 yard breaststroke finals, and turned in a fourth-place, 1:02.51 showing.
The final day of action at the MAC Championships will take place tomorrow, Feb. 29, beginning at 10:30 a.m. for the preliminary rounds and 6:30 p.m. for the final heats.
