Donald Scott, Willy Fink Stand Out at 2020 USATF Indoor Championships

Scott defended his triple jump title, while Fink placed fifth in a pair of running events

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University men's track and field alumni Donald Scott and Willy Fink competed at the 2020 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, Feb. 15, inside the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Scott successfully defended his triple jump title with a season-best distance of 17.24 meters, marking the third time in four years he has won this event at the national indoor meet. He claimed first prize at the 2019 USATF Indoor Championships with a mark of 16.85 meters, Feb. 24, after winning the triple jump at the 2017 USATF Indoor Championships with a distance of 16.99 meters, March 5.

A native of Apopka, Fla., Scott has also captured back-to-back triple jump crowns at the Outdoor USA Championships, which are held annually at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Scott won the event in 2018 with a then-personal-best distance of 17.37 meters, June 22, before reclaiming first prize the following year with a wind-aided mark of 17.74 meters, July 26, 2019. Scott, who currently ranks sixth in the triple jump per the IAAF World Rankings, also placed sixth overall at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar with a mark of 17.17 meters, Sept. 29.

While with the Eagles, Scott had a fantastic career, as he was the EMU and Mid-American Conference record holder in the triple jump for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. In addition to being the top triple jumper in program history, he was also an accomplished long jumper, holding the third-best jump in the EMU record books. Scott was named a First-Team All-American as a senior in both the 2014-15 indoor season and the outdoor season after posting top-three finishes at the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships. In total, Scott won three consecutive triple jump titles at the MAC Indoor Championships from 2013-15, and also won the long jump during the 2015 campaign, On the outdoor circuit, Scott was a three-time MAC triple jump champion (2012, 2014-15), while winning the long jump in 2014.

Additionally, Fink finished in fifth place in both of his running events. The Maumee, Ohio native wrapped up his 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:46.08, and completed the 10,000-meter run in 8:04.36. 

Fink has captured three event titles during the 2020 indoor campaign, breaking the four-minute threshold in the mile on two separate occasions. He won the mile run at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a time of 3:59.60, Jan. 17, before earning top spot in the Camel City Invitational in Winston Salem, N.C. with a time of 3:59.79, Feb. 8. He also won the 3,000-meter run at the Scarlet and White Invitational hosted by Boston University as he crossed the finish line in 7:44.21, Feb. 1.

In his time at EMU, Fink was responsible for seven MAC indoor titles, winning the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter races three straight years from 2015-17, along with the mile run during his final season in 2017. For good measure, Fink also earned seven MAC outdoor titles, winning the mile run in 2014 before winning three straight 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000-meter run victories from 2015-17.
