EMU returns to action tomorrow, Feb. 21, at LIU
VESTAL, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team took to the court for the first of nine non-conference spring break matches as it faced off with Binghamton University today, Feb. 20, at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Although the Eagles battled in every match, they ultimately fell, 4-3, to the Bearcats.
EMU claimed two wins on the singles side of the action, as senior Marie Mayerova (Kremlin, Czech Republic) and freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire Sur I'adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) each defeated their Empire State counterparts. After falling in her first set, 2-6, Mayerova cruised. She bested Binghamton's No. 1 singles player, Michelle Eisenberg in 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 fashion. Pommiers needed just two sets to dismantle BU's Jamie Lau, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 4 singles showdown.
The Eagles were the better squad in doubles, as the Green and White claimed two of the event's three paired matches. The team of newcomer Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) and junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Algappa Marticulation School) were challenged, but ultimately defeated the Bearcats' No. 2 doubles pairing by the score of 6-4. Redshirt sophomore Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) and junior transfer Morgan Ingram (Charlotte, N.C.- Grace Academy) earned a 6-4 victory as well. The win was the first for Ingram in an Eagle uniform.
"There were a lot of positives from today," offered head coach Jayson Wiseman. "We did a great job of getting the doubles point, and we have a lot to build off for the rest of our trip."
The Eagles will look to avenge the loss in fast fashion as they head to Syosset, N.Y. for a meeting with Long Island University (formerly LIU Brooklyn) tomorrow, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m.
