The Eagles head to Vestal, N.Y. to challenge Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – After a break of more than one week, the Eastern Michigan University tennis team returns to action as it begins an 11-day spring break tour that will feature nine matches in four different states. The first portion of the trip will see EMU play two matches in the Empire State, against Binghamton, Feb. 20, and Long Island University, Feb. 21, before heading to Connecticuit for a matchup with Quinnipiac, Feb. 23.

Following its weekend stint, the Eagles will compete in Pennsylvania and Ohio to close out its multi-week series of events.

The Eagles are led by senior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and Junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation School), who lead the team's singles lineup with five and four wins, respectively. The pair of Mayerova and sophomore Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin) highlights the doubles lineup, as they have earned four wins on the young season. Freshman Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire Sur I'adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) has also been impressive in her short time with the Green and White. The France native has picked up three wins for the Eagles thus far.

Eastern is back on the courts after an impressive two-win weekend during its last stint of play. Eastern kicked off the weekend with a 5-2 decision over NCAA Division II foe Missouri-St. Louis in a neutral site contest, Feb. 9, before deating Southern Indiana, 7-0, in the afternoon session.

The pairing of Mayerova and Piatek were tested in their doubles match, needing a 14-12 tiebreak to outlast the duo of  Marina Prediger and Odette Beagrie, 7-6. Pommiers and redshirt sophomore Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) notched a 7-5 victory to help Eastern take the early 1-0 edge.

The Eagles were dominant in their second match of the day, defeating Southern Indiana, 7-0, to claim the win.

On the singles side, Eastern earned a perfect sweep, as every student-athlete picked up a win. Mayerova dropped just three games as she defeated USI's No. 1 singles player, Lauren Hambrock, 6-2, 6-1. Ganesan was just as impressive at No. 2 singles, where she also needed just two sets to earn a win, dominating in 6-1, 6-2, fashion to defeat Alex Jamison.

The rout continued at the three and four singles spots, as newcomer Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) fought to secure a 6-3, 6-3 victory before Pommiers used just 13 total games to notch a 6-0, 6-1 win over USI's Chloe McIsaac. Regalado and Piatek rounded out the singles events with 6-0, 6-2, and 6-0, 6-1 wins over the Screaming Eagles.
