The Eagles earned just one match win on the day
SYOSSET, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team was met with stiff competition as it faced Long Island University in a Friday afternoon soiree today, Feb. 21, at the Sportime tennis facility. LIU emerged victorious as it compiled a clean-sweep, 7-0 win.
With the loss, Eastern (3-5) drops to two matches under the .500 mark for the season, while LIU (4-2) added to its impressive start.
Although it lost every match in singles, numerous Eagles showed high resolve. Junior Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Algappa Marticulation School) played the best individual match of the day. After falling in the first set, 1-6, she rallied to force a third, defeating LIU's No. 2 singles player, Valentina Dancenco, 6-3, in the second. Despite her best effort, she was unable to complete the comeback (5-7 third set).
Ganesan was part of the only doubles team to earn a victory as well, as she paired with first-year Eagle Isabelle Popma (Staphorst, Netherlands-Center for Sports and Education) in the No. 2 slot. The duo defeated their Empire State counterparts in 6-3 fashion, and have now notched three victories together this season.
EMU will enjoy a one-day break before returning to action Sunday, Feb. 23, against Qunnipiac. The match is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. in North Haven, Conn.
