The Eagles are set to compete for the final time before the MAC Indoor Championships
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team concludes its indoor regular season slate this weekend as it competes at the Silverston Invitational Friday, Feb. 21 inside the U-M Indoor Track Building.
The Eagles will make the short trip to the University of Michigan for the second time this season after taking part in the Wolverine Invitational, Jan. 11. Along with the Maize and Blue, EMU is scheduled to compete against Bowling Green State University, Central Michigan University, Tiffin University, and Wayne State University.
The Green and White return to action following a split weekend of competition at the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 14, and the Music City Challenge, Feb. 15. In the field events, sophomore Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) captured the Eagles' only event title at the GVSU Big Meet, winning the high jump with a mark of 1.60 meters. Also shining for EMU was junior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception), who broke her own program record in the weight throw with a heave of 19.28 meters. Incidentally, her previous personal-best came in Allendale, Mich. when the Eagles opened the indoor season at the GVSU Holiday Open, Dec. 6, 2019. She also placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 13.16 meters.
On the track, freshman Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C.-Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) finished second overall in the 60-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 7.54 seconds, and was also the runner-up in the title race with a personal-best mark of 7.53. Meanwhile, sophomore Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peter's) ranked second overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.57 seconds, while fellow sophomore Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) finished in fourth at 8.62, and redshirt freshman Brenna Cavanaugh (Bentleyville, Pa.-Bentworth) claimed sixth place with a time of 8.67.
Three Eagles also repesented the program at the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt University. Redshirt junior Karlie Swanson (New South Wales, Australia-Bellingen (Boise State)) and sophomore Janay Hall (Fayetteville, N.C.-South View (N.C. State)) each recorded personal-best times in the mile run, as Swanson claimed 19th place with a time of 4:54.66, while Hall was 24th as she crossed the finish line in 4:55.92. For her part, Hall also placed 34th overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.24. Despite taking a tumble in the 3000-meter race, redshirt senior co-captain Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) still managed to finish in fifth place as she set a season-best time of 9:41.21.
Field events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., while running events will get underway at 5 p.m. The meet is projected to finish at 8 p.m.
