DADE City, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — Could the first day of the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team spring season get any better? Competing in the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play Tournament Monday, Feb. 10, the Eagles went 2-0 on the day to advance to Tuesday's championship match versus the seventh-seeded Bulldogs of Drake University on the par 72, 7,153 yard Lake Jovita Golf Course.

The fourth-seeded Eagles, who won the event in 2015 and 2016, defeated No. 5 Loyola University, 4-2, in the opening round. They then edged No. 8 seeded DePaul University, 6-0, in the champions bracket in the afternoon.

Three of the six Eagles contributed wins both matches, with senior Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin), junior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary), and junior Tyler Rayman (Ostego, Mich.-Ostego) each coming away with a 2-0 record on the day.

Schools are competing in teams of six with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the six matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school receives ½ point. The school with the most points after the six matches wins.

Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play, the match is over.

In the opening round, Rayman built and early lead and cruised to a 4&2 decision over Justin LaFrance. After a back-and-fourth early battle, Sudinsky took a lead on the fourth hole and never relinquished in a 2&1 win over Zach Walsh.  Collins gave Eastern its third victory in as many matches in a 3&2 win against Tyler Anderson.

Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) and Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) each finished their matches tied, while Devin Johnson recorded the Ramblers' lone victory with a 4&3 triumph over Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park).

In other first round action, No. 3 Dayton defeated No. 6 Xavier, 3.5-2.5, No 7 Drake bested No. 2 Bowling Green, 4-2, while No. 8 DePaul advanced past No. 1 Ball State on tiebreakers.

In the semifinals, the Eagles dominated the Blue Demons in a 6-0 sweep. After trailing by two holes early, Sudinsky roared back to claim a 6&4 decision over Perry Chong to get Eastern rolling in the match. Celone also fell behind against Campbell Wolf before rebounding to claim a 4&3 win.

Mason and Pelak each posted 2&1 decisions in their afternoon tilts, while Collins and Rayman eventually closed out their opponents to give Eastern the clean sweep.

Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew will now face No. 7 Drake for the championship after the Bulldogs escaped with a 4.5-1.5 win over No. 3 Dayton.
