EMU Sport's Medicine finalizes reorganization of responsibilities
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University Associate Athletics Director of Sports Medicine Gretchen Buskirk announced the addition of Luke Klawiter to her staff. Additionally, EMU Sports Medicine announced its sports responsibilities for the 2020-21 academic year.
"We are thrilled to have Luke join our staff at Eastern Michigan," said Buskirk. "Luke brings a wealth of experience and skills that provide a high-level of holistic healthcare to our baseball student-athletes and has made an immediate impact to our sports medicine staff. He is a passionate and enthusiastic professional who makes a great addition to our staff at Eastern Michigan."
Klawiter will serve as the primary athletic trainer for the EMU baseball team.
Before his arrival in Ypsilanti, Klawiter was the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Stanford University. He served as an athletic trainer for the Cardinal football team for the 2018-19 season. In 2019, Klawiter took over care for the Stanford field hockey and women's open and lightweight rowing teams. The field hockey team won an America East conference championship during his stay.
Previous to Stanford he worked as a year-long Intern Athletic Trainer with the Houston Texans.
A native of Jenison, Mich., Klawiter is a 2015 graduate of Michigan State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Athletic Training. Klawiter went on to complete his Master of Science in Athletic Training from West Virginia University in 2017. While earning his degree, he worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for Morgantown High School and HealthWorks Rehab and Fitness.
The EMU Sports Medicine staff operates out of three campus athletic training facilities in the Convocation Center, Bowen Field House and the Student-Athlete Performance Center. Each athletic training facility contains taping and practice preparation areas, treatment and rehabilitative equipment, and physician exam areas that allow for daily, on campus physician care for athletic injuries and illnesses.
"I'm excited to continue to expand our sports medicine team and further elevate the level of healthcare we can provide our student-athletes, especially during these unprecedented times," added Buskirk. "I want to thank Scott Wetherbee, Erin Kido, and President Smith for their continued support in expanding our sports medicine team and giving us the resources to fully support our student-athletes."
In her third season at Eastern, Buskirk is responsible for the daily sports medicine operation for EMU's 19 varsity sports programs. She supervises eight assistant athletic trainers, numerous graduate and student athletic trainers, and also has primary responsibilities with the school's volleyball team.
Assistant Director of Sports Medicine/Associate Head Athletic Trainer Katie Skinner continues to work directly with the soccer team, while Seth Ellanson transitions to work with men's basketball and men's golf. Steven Berning and Danielle Darroch remain as the primary sports medicine contacts for the football team with assistance from Graduate Assistant Brendan Ahern. Ahern will also continue to work with the tennis team.
Allison Frymier oversees Sports Medicine operations for swimming & diving and women's cross country/track. Julia Kolder will provide services to the men's cross country/track, while Graduate Assistant Kassidy Jensen works with EMU's rowing program.
Sierra Gornowicz, who joined Eastern Michigan last winter, will continue to provide care for the women's basketball and women's golf teams. A former student-athlete, Gornowicz has nine years of experience at the high school and collegiate levels. Before arriving at EMU for the 2019-20 academic year, she was the Head Athletic Trainer at Dundee High School (2017-19) through Athletico Physical Therapy. Her previous stops include the University of Iowa (2015-17), the University of Michigan (2013-15), and the University of Arizona (2012).
Rounding out the assignments, newcomer Graduate Assistant Jake Keary takes on gymnastics.
