Four Eagles earned top-two finishes at last year's invite
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team resumes its indoor season with a quick trip to Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete in the Wolverine Invitational Saturday, Jan. 11, inside the U-M Indoor Track Building.
The event, hosted by the University of Michigan, features international and collegiate programs including Mid-American Conference foes Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, and Toledo, along with in-state opponents Grand Valley State and Michigan State. Miami (Fla.) is the Atlantic Coast Conference's lone representative, while contenders from Canadian universities Guelph and Western Ontario are also expected to take part.
The Eagles make their return to competition after starting the campaign at the GVSU Holiday Open, Dec. 6, 2019. In all, the Green and White captured three individual titles and 13 top-three finishes in the season opener. EMU swept the podium in the 400m race, as sophomore Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) claimed first place with a personal-best time of 55.88 seconds. From there, fellow sophomore Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) finished in second place exactly one tick behind Cernej-Garcia, before junior Abbey Zastrow (Arcadia, Wis.-Arcadia (University of Mary)) clinched third place at 57.83.
EMU also posted a one-two finish in the 200m dash, as senior Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)) and junior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) led the field with times of 24.82 and 24.96, respectively. Meanwhile, junior Quintella Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.-Saint Mary's (Texas Southern)) became the third Eagle to earn an individual title, as she was the only competitor to clear the 1.70m-high bar, while fellow junior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) shattered a program record in the weight throw with a heave of 19.06m, which was good for fourth overall at the meet.
The Eagles saw top-two finishes from four student-athletes, while 11 marked career-best efforts at last year's Wolverine Invitational, Jan. 12, 2019. On the field side, former Eagle Crystal Washington earned the Green and White's sole event title of the day when she cleared 12.14m in the triple jump. Her effort at the meet was just .01 meters shy of her career-best.
The meet is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and is currently anticipated to run until 4 p.m. Eastern will then compete Friday, Jan. 17, as the team travels to University Center, Mich. to partake in the Doug Hansen Open.
