The Eagles will compete in the meet for the third consecutive season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team returns to action as it makes the short trek down Washtenaw Ave. to compete in the Wolverine Invitational Saturday, Jan. 11, inside the U-M Indoor Track Building.
The event, hosted by the University of Michigan, features international and collegiate competitors including Mid-American Conference foes Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, and Toledo, along with in-state opponents Grand Valley State and Michigan State. Miami (Fla.) is the Atlantic Coast Conference's lone representative, while contenders from Canadian universities Guelph and Western Ontario are also expected to take part.
"We are looking forward to our opening meet which will give us a competitive look at where we are coming off of the semester break," said head coach John Goodridge. "For some individuals it will be their first opportunity to wear our traditional uniform in representing the program."
The Eagles resume competition after earning three individual titles in their season opener at the SVSU Holiday Open, Dec. 6-7, 2019. Most notably, the Green and White clinched each of the top-three places in the weight throw, with freshman Kappa Bedoui (Doha, Qatar-Aspire Academy) leading the way in his collegiate debut with a toss of 19.52m. Redshirt senior Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) finished in second place with a heave of 18.90m, while redshirt junior Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) placed third with a 18.64m throw.
Meanwhile, redshirt junior Baboucar Sallah-Mohammed (Arlington, Va.-Fishburne Military) was the only EMU entrant in the long jump, taking home first prize with a leap of 6.83m. On the track, sophomore Charlie Young (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) clinched the individual crown in the 600m race, as he set a new personal-best and SVSU Fieldhouse-record with a time of 1:21.89.
The Eagles shined at last year's Wolverine Invitational with eight podium finishes, Jan. 12, 2019. The event saw one runner earn an event title, as EMU alumnus Tyler Underwood continued his early-season successes with the top finish in the 200m. His time of 21.49 seconds also set the meet Invitational record for the event, besting former Eagle Tyler Brown's finish of 21.51 at the meet during the 2017-18 campaign.
The meet is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and is currently anticipated to run until 4 p.m. The Eagles will host the Can-Am International Saturday, Jan. 25, at Bob Parks Track inside Bowen Field House.
