Women's Track and Field Wins Five Event Titles at Can-Am International

The Eagles took first place in sprints, hurdles, and relay races
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team captured five event titles at the Can-Am International Saturday, Jan. 25 at Bob Parks Track inside Bowen Field House.
Senior co-captain Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) came just 0.04 seconds shy of matching her own meet record in the 60-meter dash, as she claimed first prize with a season-best time of 7.55. Sophomore Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peters) earned the 60-meter hurdles crown with a personal-best mark of 8.63, while fellow sophomore Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) and redshirt freshman Brenna Cavanaugh (Bentleyville, Pa.-Bentworth) finished third and fourth with times of 8.69 and 8.78, respectively. Cavanaugh also placed fourth in the long jump with a 5.54-meter leap.
EMU clinched the top two spots in the 200-meter sprint, as junior Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) won the event with a time of 24.67 seconds, while senior Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet (Garden City C.C.)) was right behind at 24.92. Gibson's mark was 0.03 ticks away from the meet record held by current junior Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central). Meanwhile, sophomore Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.) clinched first place in the 400-meter dash as she crossed the finish line in 56.34.
From there, the Eagles were the fastest 4x200-meter relay at the meet with a time of 1:41.12, before both of Eastern's 4x400-relay squads finished in the top three overall. Redshirt senior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) was the only EMU harrier to run the mile in fewer than five minutes, as she crossed the finish line in third place at 4:55.95, and ranked fourth in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:16.11
In the field events, sophomore Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) ended the day with a pair of podium finishes, as she placed second in the long jump with a leap of 5.60 meters and third in the high jump at 1.60 meters. Additionally, junior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) ranked third in the weight throw at 18.25 meters and fifth in the shot put with a heave of 13.11 meters, while fellow junior Graysen Simmons (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) was fourth in the pole vault at 3.75 meters.
The Eagles will go a week without competition before competing at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind., Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8.
