The Eagles and Spartans square off Thursday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team is set to open its 2020 spring campaign when it treks to Michigan State University for a match against the Spartans Thursday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m.
The match is EMU's first on-court action since the fall of 2019, and first full season since the program was reinstated last year after a season away from competition. This year's squad is comprised of two returning players, redshirt senior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and redshirt sophomore Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco), along with six student-athletes who will don the Green and White for the first time.
Back for his second year at the helm of EMU tennis, Head Coach Jayson Wiseman brings a 16-10 overall record into the season. Most recently, he led the Eagles to the 2018 Mid-American Conference championships as the No. 5 overall seed.
Last week, the Eagles were picked eighth overall in the annual Mid-American Conference preseason poll, a spot Wiseman hopes will encourage the team to perform against their expectations during the entirety of the season.
"We have a great group of players, with all different styles and from all different backgrounds," offered the second-year coach. "Our student-athletes and staff works incredibly hard on and off the court. Our goal is to build upon every match and compete at a high level, no matter who we face off with."
