EMU Tennis Debuts 2019 Season at Purdue Invite

The Eagles picked up four wins on the weekend
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team was on the courts to open its 2019 fall campaign, Sept. 20-22, at the Purdue Invite. The squad had entries in eight of the tournament's 12 draws, and was one of 11 teams included in the event. Overall, the team won four matches during the weekend.
On the singles side, veterans Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) started their seasons with wins, as Regalado defeated Lipscom's Eleanor Chapman, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, in the Basham Courts Draw, while Mayerova took down UCONN's Mirelille Moreau, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, in the Purdue Invite Black Singles Draw. Both players dropped their next two matches to finish fourth in their respective draws.
Elsewhere on the singles courts, newcomers Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire sur I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau), Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem University)) and Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation) each donned the Green and White for the first time. Pommiers dropped her first match to Louisville's Maia-Halmuller before falling to DePaul's Aspasia Avgeri, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, in the consolation semifinal of the Boilermaker Singles Draw. Not discouraged, she fought back to pick up a win over UCONN's Mirelille Moreau, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. Piatek enjoyed a first round bye before dropping a quarterfinal match to Cincinnati's Alexia Coutino, 6-3, 6-2. Ganesan picked up her first win as an Eagle, defeating Bowling Green's Marta Bettinelli in the consolation semifinals in the Hammer Down Single Draw.
In doubles action, the team of Mayerova and Pommiers fell to UCONN in the consolation semifinals of the Purdue Invite Gold Doubles Draw. Ganesan and Piatek also teamed up for the Green and White, but we unable to pull out a win in the Black Doubles Draw of the event. Regalado saw action on the doubles court as well, but was unable to find victory.
The Eagles will next see match action Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 10-12, when they travel to Charleston, Ill. to compete in the Eastern Illinois Fall Invite. For the most up-to-date information on EMU tennis, visit EMUEagles.com
