The squad picked up double-digit wins for the first time in 2019

CHARLESTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team was back on the courts last weekend, Friday-Saturday, Oct. 11-12, as part of the Eastern Illinois Panther Invite. A rain-filled weekend could not stop Eastern from registering its best performance of the 2019 fall campaign, as the team put up a season-high 12 wins (three by retirement).

On the singles side, Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) picked up an opening round win in the A Singles Draw, defeating Missouri State's Taylor Shaw, 8-6. Mayerova dropped a tough semifinal match, 8-4, but came away with a third-place finish. In the same bracket, Emma-Lou Pommiers (Aire sur I'Adour, France-Saint Dominique Pau) defeated IUPUI's Gabrielle Ochalik, 8-6, and later advance to the flight final, where she lost a close matchup, 6-3, 6-4.

In the B Singles Draw, Vasavi Ganesan (Tamil Nadu, India-Alagappa Matriculation) earned a first round win, 8-5, and later captured the flight's third-place finish, outlasting Eastern Illinois' Esa Kavtaradez, 8-5. Julia Piatek (Melgiew, Poland-Liceum Lublin (Salem University)) finished third in the consolation rounds of the same bracket.

Elsewhere in singles action, veteran Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) advanced to the final round of the C Singles Draw, where she would drop a close match, 8-6, to take the second place crown.

In doubles action, the Eagles picked up four wins, all in the A Doubles Draw. The team of Mayerova and Piatek cruised to the finals with a 7-6 win over their counterparts from Missouri State, before besting IUPUI, 6-1. The duo fell in the flight final, 6-2. EMU's pairing of Regalado and Ganesan avenged a first round loss in the same bracket, eventually winning two consecutive matches to claim the consolation title.

With the Panther Invite in the books, the team now turns its attention to the ITA Midwest Regional, which will be played Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 17-20, in East Lansing, Mich.
