Cizmas, Smith, and Swanson all finish in the top-20
JAMAICA PLAIN, Mass. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team finished in seventh place with a team total of 212 points at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown hosted by Boston College Friday, Sept. 20, at Franklin Park.
EMU's seventh-place finish is the program's best result in three trips to Franklin Park, and marks a three-spot improvement from its last visit when the Green and White claimed 10th position with a team score of 254 points.
"It wasn't our best day but it was good to get the feel of a big meet and figure out what we need to do moving forward," said head coach Sue Parks. "We came away with some positives and some areas that definitely need improvement and that will help us prepare for our next meet."
Graduate student Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), finished 13th as she paced the Eagles with a time of 17:43. Redshirt senior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) finished a couple seconds behind Cizmas to secure 15th place, while senior Karlie Swanson (New South Wales, Australia-Bellingen) clinched 17th place when she crossed the finish line two ticks behind Smith.
A pair of underclassmen finished in the points, as freshman Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) placed 77th with a time of 18:49, while sophomore Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy) finished 103rd at 19:11. Junior Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead) ended the meet 126th, as sophomores Janay Hall (Fayetteville, N.C.-South View) and Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson) ended the meet in 132nd and 153rd place, respectively.
Eastern continues its weekend Saturday, Sept. 21, when it travels to Willow Metropark in New Boston, Mich. to compete in Wayne State University's Second Annual Warrior Challenge presented by RunDetroit. The race is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
