Eagles Overpower Mastodons in a 3-1 Offensive Showcase

EMU defeats Purdue Fort Wayne for the first time since 2015
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team took down Purdue Fort Wayne in a thrilling 3-1 non-conference victory Tuesday, Sept. 17, inside the Convocation Center. After EMU dropped the first set 18-25, it responded by winning in four sets taking the last three by score of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-15. The Eagles victory marked its first win against the Mastodons since 2015.
EMU (4-5) dominated on offense, outhitting the Mastodons .293 to .097 and producing 60 kills to Purdue Fort Wayne's 37. Eastern Michigan also kept Purdue Fort Wayne (3-8) at bay by out-blocking the Mastodons, 11.0 to 6.0.
Junior April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.– Southwest) and redshirt freshman Raeven Chase (Toronto, Ont.– Michael Power St. Joseph Catholic) displayed a great defensive outing with five block assists apiece.
Junior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.– Buchanan) did work on offense and defense, boasting a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. Senior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.– Perry Meridian) helped spark the Eagle's offense by adding nine digs and 28 assists, her second-best assist performance of the season thus far.
The Eagles will do some traveling later this week as they head to West Lafayette, Ind. for the Purdue Tournament. Eastern Michigan opens up Friday, Sept. 20, with matches against Murray State (12:30 p.m.) and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (5 p.m.). EMU will wrap-up the weekend affair on Saturday, Sept. 21 with a match against Purdue University (3 p.m.). From there, the Green and White open up MAC play Friday Sept. 27, when it travels to Kalamazoo to take on in-state rival Western Michigan for a 7 p.m. start.
