Eagles Split First Day at Stacey Clark Classic

Eastern swept Texas A&M Corpus Christi after getting turned aside by Murray State

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team kicked off the Stacey Clark Classic hosted by Purdue University by splitting its two matches on Friday, Sept. 20., falling in three to Murray State to kick off the day, but rallying to sweep Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the nightcap.

In Eastern's (5-6) second match of the day it picked up its second sweep of the season, turning aside Texas A&M Corpus Christi (7-6) 25-23, 25-23, and 25-15.

The Eagles jumped ahead early in the first set and were able to withstand multiple comeback attempts from the Islanders, ultimately seeing the score tied on four different occasions. The Green and White held strong in the end, capturing a two-point first set victory. The second stanza was a back-and-forth affair, but ultimately EMU pulled ahead after the match was tied 17-17, to secure the 2-0 lead.

With the match firmly in hand, Eastern came out in the third set and, thanks to a 4-0 run, put Texas A&M Corpus Christi away early.

Junior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) once again registered a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Alayna Jansky (Mukwonago, Wis.-Mukwonago) chipped in a double-double of her own with 12 kills and 12 digs. 

The setting duo of Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) and Jayden Otto (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge) registered 20 and 15 assitss, respectively. Seniro libero Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) led the defensive effort with a 20-dig performance, while Strefling add 13 and Jansky 12.

EMU (5-6) started the day slowly, falling to MSU (6-4) in straight sets 25-17, 25-20, 25-21. The Racers out-did the Eagles in nearly every major category, including attack percentage (.282 to .091), kills (43 to 27), assists (40 to 26), aces (5 to 3), and blocks (5 to 4). The lone category the Green and White came out with an advantage in was digs (40 to 35).

Junior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) led the offensive attack with 10 kills and registered yet another double-double thanks to her 11 digs. Redshirt senior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) added nine kills while hitting .350 and turning aside two blocks. Senior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) served as the Eagles' five-one setter for the match and led the way with 20 assists. The setter also added a season-high three kills to go along with four digs. Fellow senior Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) put up a game-high 14 digs.

Eastern wraps up play at the Stacey Clark Classic with a match against No. 21 Purdue at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Eagles then kick off Mid-American Conference play with a trip west to take on Western Michigan Friday, Sept. 27, and Northern Illinois Saturday, Sept. 28.
