Men's Golf Sets 54-Hole Scoring Record at Marshall Invite

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team broke the 54-hole school record with a 20-under par total of 832 (280-272-280), finishing in a tie for third at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational Tuesday, Sept. 10, on the par 71, 6,573-yard Guyan Golf & Country Club course. The Eagles' previous three-round best was 836, set in 2018 at the Loyola Intercollegiate.
Redshirt sophomore Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) closed with a final round 68 for a two-day tally of eight-under 205 (70-67-68). The three round total is the third-best in program history and just five shots off Tyler Lewis' all-time mark of 200 set at the Loyola Intercollegiate, Feb. 25-26, 2018. Mason bettered his previous 54-hole low by 16 stokes when he shot a 221 at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, March 9-10, 2019.
VCU overtook Dayton on the final day of competition to win the event with a 31-under 821 (273-272-276). The Flyers posted a 824 (271-272-281) and were led to medalist Kyle Schmidt with an 11-under par 202 (65-69-68).
Junior Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St. Joseph's Catholic) picked up his sixth career top-10 showing with a ninth-place finish. Celone notched a 71 on Tuesday after back-to-back rounds of 68 to open the season. Junior Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) also posted his lowest 54-hole tournament score with a 208 (73-67-68) to finish in a tie for 12th-place.
Freshman Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) tied for 38th at 214 (71-70-73), while junior Tyler Rayman (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego) finished 43rd with a 215 (71-70-74).
Eastern Michigan returns to action next at the Firestone Invitational, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, in Akron, Ohio.
