The Dexter, Mich.-based race is set for Friday, Aug. 30
DEXTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team is set to begin its season when it travels to nearby Dexter, Mich. for the Michigan Open, Friday, Aug. 30.
Hosted by the University of Michigan, the race will be held at Hudson Mills Metropark and is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. No strangers to the Michigan Open, the Eagles last competed in the event during the 2017 season, taking home six top-20 finishes.
"This competition will conclude a hard week of training at camp which I am sure is the same for Michigan," said Head Coach John Goodridge. I am pleased with what I have seen this week in terms of attitude and summer physical preparation. This is the first time in nine years that we begin the season not the defending MAC cross country champions but we are looking forward very much to the season."
Highlighting the lineup for the Green and White is sophomore Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio- Thomas Worthington), who took home MAC Freshman of the Year honors last season after a 20th place effort at the conference championships, making it the second consecutive season EMU won the award after Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf).
Senior Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) will also look to set the pace for the Eagles during the upcoming season. Wicker is a two-time member of the Academic All-MAC team, as he additionally received the honor for his academic and athletic efforts during the 2017 season. The Pinckney, Mich., native is also one of only four runners to hold a perfect 4.0 GPA. Wicker, a nursing major, was EMU's top finisher at the MAC Championship, clocking a time of 25:14.4, good for 19th-place, while also pacing the Eagles at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, earning a 50th-place finish.
Admission to Hudson Mills Metropark is $10. The price of admission includes parking. The site opens at 7 a.m. daily, and features in-park restrooms and hydration options.
