BOGOTA, Colombia (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University sophomore women's basketball player Natalia Pineda (Miami, Fla.-John A. Ferguson) will represent Team Columbia at the FIBA U-19 World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand, July 20-28.
"We are excited Natalia gets to experience this unique opportunity to represent the Colombian national team," EMU Head Women's Basketball Coach Fred Castro said. "She has worked incredibly hard on her game this offseason. This trip will be a great setting for her to continue to develop her game and see the by product of all of her hard work. The Colombian national team has made great strides recently and it is nice to see Nat continue to be a big part of the puzzle for them."
The Miami, Fla. native is no stranger to the international stage, having led Team Colombia to a fourth-place finish at last year's FIBA Women's America's Championship in Mexico City, Mexico. Pineda burst onto the scene with a 29-point performance in her sqaud's quarterfinals game against Puerto Rico to set up a semifinals clash with the United States. She knocked down 11-of-16 field goals, highlighted by seven three-pointers. For the tournament, the 5-foot-9 guard averaged 10.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per contest.
Pineda and Team Colombia will kick off the group phase against Spain Saturday, July 20, before squaring off against Germany Sunday, July 21. Group play concludes Tuesday, July 23, against Japan. From there, the final phase will run July 24-28 in a bracket-style finish.
