Complete Schedule.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Volleyball Coach Darcy Dorton announced the regular season schedule for the upcoming 2019 campaign, June 12. This year, the Eagles will once again see four non-conference tournaments before EMU hits the 16-match Mid-American Conference schedule.
"I love the way this 2019 preseason schedule has come together," said Dorton. "We will be facing strong competition, including four teams that made last year's NCAA tournament."
The 2018 MAC Tournament champions open the season with a three-game stretch in Utah, Aug. 30-31, playing in the Utah State Invitational in Logan, Utah. The Eagles open the invitational by playing the host Aggies, and follow it with a match against Southern Utah University. The trip to the Beehive State concludes with a contest Xavier University.
The Green and White then hit the road to the bayous of Louisiana, playing in the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic, Sep. 6-7, hosted by Louisiana University at Lafayette. EMU kicks off the weekend by taking on Florida A&M University before squaring off with tournament host Louisiana, Sept. 6. The tournament wraps with the Eagles' first game in program history against McNeese State University.
Eastern Michigan returns to Washtenaw County for a series of three games, two of which to be played in the friendly confines of the Convocation Center. The Green and White welcomes fellow 2018 NCAA Tournament qualifier Navy to Ypsilanti, Sept. 14, as part of the Michigan Invitational. The Eagles and Mids will start at 5 p.m. Friday night. Eastern then takes on the University of Michigan, who made a run to the round of 16 in the 2018 postseason, Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m.
"Winning at home is always a goal for this team," Dorton added. "We will open with Navy who was an automatic NCAA qualifier after winning their conference championship. It will be a showdown of tournament tested teams which will only help to prepare us for the always competitive MAC regular season."
The final non-conference home game of the season will be a Tuesday night affair, as the Eagles welcome the Mastadons of Purdue Fort Wayne to the Convo for a 6 p.m. match, Sept. 18.
Wrapping up the non-conference portion of the season will be a trip to the Purdue Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind., Sept. 20-21. The Eagles will take on fellow NCAA automatic qualifier Murray State as well as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to start the weekend, Sept. 20, and will then take on perennial AVCA Top 25 team Purdue, Sept. 21.
Following non-conference play, the Eagles will close out the season with 16-straight MAC matches, vying for one of the coveted top-eight spots to qualify for the 2019 MAC Volleyball Tournament at the Stroh Center on the campus of Bowling Green State University, Nov. 21-24. BGSU will host the tournament after winning the MAC Tournament a season ago.
The 2019 campaign will mark the first season with Dorton leading the Eagles, while it also signifies the 43rd season of varsity volleyball competition at EMU.
