YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – With the summer individual golf circuit getting underway, Eastern Michigan University redshirt freshman Tony Fuentes (East Lansing, Mich.-East Lansing) is set to play in the 33rd PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship at the PGA Golf Club Wanamaker Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The three-round tournament tees off on Friday, May 10, and concludes on Sunday, May 12. Fuentes is one of 31 student-athletes to compete as an individual in the tournament and the lone Mid-American Conference member student-athlete to participate.
The PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship provides a top-level championship in conjunction with its PGA WORKS Career Expo. Together, they're designed to cultivate the next generation of the golf industry and business leaders, as participating student-athletes are exposed to internships and employment opportunities supported by leading golf companies.
After redshirting last year, Fuentes played last fall in the EKU Intercollegiate, finishing with a 226 (77-74-75).
The EMU men's golf team finished with the lowest four-player team scoring average at 289.1. The tally was 1.3 strokes ahead of the 2016-17 squad's mark of 290.4. Eastern Michigan finished in the top-five at six different tournaments this season, including a first-place finish at the EKU Raising Canes Intercollegiate, Sept. 15-16. Additionally, Eastern finished the regular season ranked 96th nationally with an 80-44-2 record with six top-100 victories and a pair of top-50 triumphs.
About the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship
The PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship (formerly known as the National Minority College Championship) originated at a meeting in November 1986, following the Jackson State University Golf Tournament. The founders' goal was to elevate the game at minority colleges and universities by providing student-athletes with the opportunity to compete on a championship stage during an era when they were excluded from playing in many collegiate golf events. The inaugural Championship was conducted in the spring of 1987 at Highland Park Golf Course in Cleveland. Since 1998, PGA Golf Club has hosted the Championship, and in 2006 the PGA of America was granted complete ownership and management of the Championship by the National Minority College Golf Scholarship Fund.
