MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team preps for its upcoming trip to the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships May 9-11, hosted by Ball State University. EMU will seek to earn its first MAC Outdoor Championship since the 2016 season.

The Green and White hope to end their streak of second-place finishes, falling by a small margin in both 2017 and 2018 to the University of Akron in the outdoor title chase.  Additionally, the team looks to improve on its already conference-leading 12 outdoor titles in program history, five more than any other MAC school.

Eastern brings 10 student-athletes that earned top-10 finishes at the 2018 event back for the 2019 meet, including First Team All-MAC selections junior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) and senior captain Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell). The duo leads the Eagles' sprint efforts in Muncie, as Harris earned bronze in 2018 in the 100m and holds the conference's second-best effort in the event this season, while Johnston heads all Eagles in both the 200m and 400m this season as she holds the fourth-best performances by a MAC athlete in both events, while she also finished sixth and fourth in the 200m and 400m, respectively, at the 2018 meet. Junior Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) made her presence known throughout the 2019 campaign, as the Richmond Heights, Ohio product currently holds the conference's fifth-best 100m run and looks for her first individual outdoor top-three finish.

As in year's past, EMU's depth in the distance events is no secret to the conference competition, as the Eagles captured five of the MAC's top-10 efforts in the 800m, 1500m, 3000 steeplechase, and 5000m throughout the 2019 campaign. Making her last trip to the MAC Outdoor Championships is senior captain Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville), who looks to finish her time in the Green and White on top after placing fourth in the 1500m and second in the 5000m at the 2018 outdoor title chase. She currently sits with the conference's second-best 5000m performance with a time of 16:08.63, while also holding the MAC's third-best 1500m mark at 4:21.59.  Breakout star and redshirt junior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) heads to her first outdoor conference championships with the sixth-best 5000m time in the league, running the distance in 16:59.15, and the MAC's second-fastest 3000S time of 10:20.94, and looks to make an impact on EMU's point total.

In the hurdles' events, EMU is paced by senior captain Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern (Georgia State)) in the 100-meter event, as the Mitten State product finished sixth at the 2018 championships while also holding the league's fifth-best mark in 2019. Hailing from Ann Arbor, Mich., freshman Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) dominated the 400-meter hurdles throughout 2019 and heads to her first outdoor conference championships with the MAC's seventh-best performance all season.

The Eagles' 4x100-meter relay squad enters the outdoor championships leading the league with a season-best time of 45.22, set at the Jesse Owens Classic, April 26. The defending champions' 2019 mark is .05 seconds faster than their 2018 title-earning dash, and three of the four members of the 2018 squad returns to race in Muncie. The 4x400-meter cohort looks to improve on its 2018 third-place time at the championship event, where the group crossed the finish line in 3:42.24.

Sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) paces EMU's field efforts, as the thrower has shattered the EMU record books throughout 2019.  The Kingston, Jamaica native holds the conference's 14th-best shot put mark, as she cleared 13.60m at the Spartan Invitational, April 5,  and the MAC's 12th-furthest hammer clearance of 50.80m, set at the Jesse Owens Classic, April 26. Both heaves etched the sophomore's name in program history, as her shot put throw ranks fourth in EMU laurels while her hammer throw is the fifth-best by an athlete donning the Green and White. Junior Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West) rounds out the league's top-10 javelin marks this season, clearing 40.07m at the Len Paddock Open, May 3, while sophomore Crystal Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.-Carson) looks to improve on her fifth-place finish in the 2018 triple jump competition of 12.10m, as she already marked a season-best clearance of 12.38m, the third-best seen in the conference, at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational, March 28.  The Eagles also count on Goff to compete in the long jump, where she finished ninth in 2018 and currently holds the league's sixth-furthest leap this season.

The hunt for a MAC Championship begins Thursday, May 9, led off by the women's hammer at 10 a.m., while running events scheduled to begin with the women's 1500m trials at 4:45 p.m. The men's hammer kicks off Friday's competition at 10 a.m. and the 100-meter hurdles trials start the competition on the track at 4:45 p.m. Saturday's start is set for 11 a.m., led by the men's discus, followed all final heats of the running events, beginning at 1 p.m. The meet will be broadcast live by Ball State All-Access, while fans can also follow the MAC Championships via live results by clicking here.
