Eagles Complete Day One of MAC Championships

EMU earns three spots in Saturday’s running finals, while recording two top-15 field marks

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team finished its first day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Ball State University Thursday, May 9. EMU saw three performances that earned spots in Saturday's finals, while two Eagles earned top-15 marks in their respective field events.
After one day of battling for the conference title, the University of Akron and Central Michigan University lead the pack with 29 points each, followed by Bowling Green State University with 26 points, and Ohio University rounds out the top four with 17 points. The rest of the top-10 rankings are led by Kent State University in fifth with 15.5 points, Miami University with 10 points, Northern Illinois with seven points, University at Buffalo with 6.5 points, University of Toledo with 6 points, and Ball State University with five points. Western Michigan University and the Eastern finish out the standings with four points and one point, respectively.
On the track, the Eagles saw a third-place effort in each of the day's running trials, as senior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville), junior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), and freshman Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) registered the third-best mark in the preliminary heats of the 1500m, 200m, and 400-meter hurdles, respectively. Meyers stormed ahead early in her 1500m race, holding strong in the top-five runners throughout all laps of the race, finishing with a time of 4:40.71. Cernej-Garcia earned the top time of any freshman with her career-best 400-meter hurdles mark of 1:01.12, .26 seconds better than her previous top effort set at the Len Paddock Open, May 3. Johnston closed out the day's time-trial performances with her third-place 200m run, crossing the finish line in 23.96, just .03 seconds behind her top-collegiate mark.
In the field events, senior captain Rebekah Carr (Celina, Ohio-Celina) led the way with an eighth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 3.57m, earning her second straight eighth-place mark at the outdoor championships. Junior Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic) not only competed in the day's four heptathlon events, but also marked a tenth-place effort in the javelin throw, marking her best heave while donning the Green and White of 38.48m. Sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) competed in the hammer throw, marking a throw of 49.44m for 13th overall.
Three Eagles participated in the heptathlon, competing in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200m events throughout the first day of the championship meet. Freshman MAC Co-Field Indoor Track Performer of the Year Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) continued her success in the multis, earning the Eagles' top finish in three of the day's four events, while marking a career-high performance in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.94. Senior Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J.-Toms River North) paced the Green and White's 100-meter hurdles efforts, clearing the obstacles in 14.63, while setting her top-collegiate clearance in the shot put, clearing 9.05m. After Thursday's events, Iverson sits in eighth place with 2778 points, followed by Byrd in 10th with 2702 points, and Salzbrunn in 13th with 2402 points.
EMU continues conference championship action Friday, May 10, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m with the men's hammer throw.
