Eagles Qualify Seven For Saturday’s Finals at MAC Championships

EMU saw two athletes add points to the board along with seven performances that qualified for Saturday’s finals

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team finished its second day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday, May 10, tallying seven performances that qualified the Eagles for Saturday's final heats.
After two days of championship action, the University of Akron has control of the standings, leading with 68 points. Behind the Zips is Central Michigan University with 56 points, Bowling Green State University with 40 points, Northern Illinois University with 29 points, and Kent State University with 24.5 points. Ohio University sits in sixth with 21 points, Miami University holds 20 points, Western Michigan moved up the ranks, now with a total of 17 points, followed by University of Toledo with 15 points, Ball State University with eight points, the Eagles with seven points, and the University of Buffalo with six-and-a-half points. With 10 final heats to add points to the board scheduled for Saturday, the conference title is still up for grabs.
Two Eagles were responsible for the Green and White's six-point scoring boost, as redshirt junior Emily Smith's (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) seventh-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase added two points for Eastern, registering a time of 10:45.89, while senior captain Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern (Georgia State)) added four points to the Eagles' total with a fifth-place finish in the long jump, clearing 5.88m.
EMU's multis athletes completed the heptathlon Friday, competing in the long jump, javelin, and 800m. Junior Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Christian) earned all of the Eagles' top finishes in the day's heptathlon events, including top-five efforts in the javelin and 800m with marks of 35.56m and 2:28.99, respectively. With her performances, Salzbrunn finished ninth in the overall heptathlon event with 4286 points. Finishing one spot behind her was freshman Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) with a career-high point total of 4279, while senior Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J.-Toms River North) earned a 13th-place finish with a total of 3703 points.
In other field events, sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) marked her career-best shot put clearance of 13.91m, good for 10th overall. Freshman Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield) also recorded a top-collegiate performance, clearing 5.54m in the long jump to take home 12th place.
Friday's time-trial action saw Goff and freshmen Alysse Marie Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peters) and Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) kick off the Eagles' efforts on the track with three of the top-10 qualifying times in the 100-meter hurdles. Goff earned the third-fastest mark in the time trials, clearing the hurdles in 13.74, while Wade finished with the sixth-best time, crossing the finish line in 13.89. Gazaway registered the ninth-best finish, gathering her top-collegiate time of 13.96.
The 100m dash followed suit, as all three EMU runners qualified for Saturday's finals, led by junior Brittni Mason's (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) fifth-fastest mark of 11.89. Senior captain Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell) came in just behind her with the sixth-best time of 11.91, and junior Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet) finished three places behind her with a time of 11.98. The 400m trials saw junior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Chrsitan) qualify for Saturday's final with a time of 54.46.
EMU hits the big stage one final time to chase the conference crown Saturday, May 11, beginning at 11 a.m. with the triple jump.
