JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team qualified six student-athletes to participate in the upcoming NCAA East Regional Championships Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25. The Eagles send representatives to compete in three field and three track events.
In order to qualify for the NCAA East Regional, an individual must be among the top-48 declared student-athletes in their respective events.
The Eagles who qualified for the 2019 East Regionals are seniors Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), Alex Jacobs (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Jerome), Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), and Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland), junior Terrell Posada (Naples, Fla.-Naples High), and sophomore Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England).
Ziegenfuss competes in the javelin for the fourth consecutive season, holding the 12th-best clearance in the East region with a mark of 69.78m. The Allentown, Pa. product recorded his best mark at the Tennessee Relays, April 11, not only qualifying him for the postseason event but also setting the new EMU school record in the javelin. He enters the competition after placing second in his specialty with a mark of 62.40m at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Muncie, Ind.
Underwood not only enters the regional competition with the Eagles' top track seeding, but comes off a MAC Championship effort that included a individual title in the 200m, a second-place finish in the 400m, in addition to his running of a leg of both of the Eagles' 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays that finished second in their respective competitions. The MAC's Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer competes in the 400m with an entry time of 46.00, the 13th-fastest in the region, earned at the Raleigh Relays, March 29. Richardson also competes in the 400m, sitting 27th with a time of 46.40, also recorded in Raleigh earlier this year. He comes off a fourth-place finish in the event at the conference championships, recording a time of 47.03.
Posada earns his first trip to the East Regionals with the 28th-fastest time in the 100m, registering a time of 10.28 at the Raleigh Relays. The Naples, Fla. native most recently earned an individual conference title in the event, crossing the finish line with a time of 10.45 in Muncie, Ind., May 12.
In the field events, both Jacobs and Herbert enter the national-championship qualifying event with top-45 marks in their respective specialties. Jacobs ranks 42nd with a clearance of 5.06m in the pole vault, recorded at the conference championships, as well as two other times in the 2019 campaign. Herbert holds the 43rd-best clearance in the region with a hop, skip, and a jump of 15.28m, which was good for a third-place finish in Muncie, Ind.
