EMU's Novice Eight boat topped five boats to bring home the Eagles' first win at the event

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Novice Eight boat of the Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team captured the top finish at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta Saturday, May 11, bringing home Eastern's first-ever championship at the Philadelphia-based event.

"We did what we came here to do, and that was win," reported Head Novice Coach Delaney McGuire. "I am proud of this group and what they have been able to accomplish in their first year. We are excited to get back to the team and prep for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships next week."

The all freshman Novice Eight boat of coxswain Antinique Kirksey (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth), Hannah Barry (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way West)Priscilla Brom (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford), Brianna Gracey (Dayton, Ohio-Chaminade Julienne), Anna Eschenburg (Bruce Township, Mich.-Romeo), MacKaela Geisler (Mount Horeb, Wis.-Mount Horeb)Noelle Haines (Batavia, Ill.-Batavia)Mary Hemgesberg (Freeland, Mich.-Freeland), and Caitlin Rodanhisler (Hopkins, Mich.-Hopkins) entered the Grand Final with the third-fastest semifinal mark, but crossed the finish line in the Grand Final with a time of 06.38.635 for first overall. The cohort was more than four seconds faster than any of its competitors, topping boats from Grand Valley State University, Bucknell University, Temple University, Purdue University, and CAA-foe University of Delaware.

The Eagles head back to Ypsilanti to prepare for the CAA Championships Sunday, May 19. While the Novice Eight boat will not compete at the event, members of the squad are eligible to compete in other Eagles' boats. Championship competition begins at 10:20 a.m and when available, more information on the meet can be found on the Women's Rowing schedule page on EMUEagles.com.
