Offense Slowed as Baseball Drops Midweek Game at Youngstown State

5/1/2019 4:32:00 PM | Baseball

Hopkins blasts his second home run of the season

NILES, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Stagnant offense defined the day for the Eastern Michigan University baseball team as it dropped a midweek game against Youngstown State University today, April 1, at Eastwood Field. Eastern (11-33-1, 6-12 MAC) fell behind, 2-0, early on and was unable to recover, eventually falling, 10-4.

On the hill, freshman Tyler Koons (Flat Rock, Mich.-Gibraltar Carlson) started the game for the Green and White. After relinquishing two runs in the first inning, Koons was composed in the second and kept the Penguins off the board. In all, Koons tossed four innings.

Taking over for Koons in the fifth, redshirt junior Nick Porretto (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva (McHenry C.C.)) was impressive on the hill. After giving up a lead-off double, Porretto found his stride, retiring the next three batters he faced to keep the score intact, 5-0. Porretto continued his success in the sixth as he recorded a 1-2-3 inning. In total, the Geneva, Ill. native went 2.2 innings in the game, allowing four runs on three hits in his effort.

The Eagles were unable to contain the Penguin offense in the midweek setback, giving up 10 runs on 14 hits in the midweek contest.

Offensively, the Eagles mustered just six hits in the contest. Although Eastern hitters reached base in each of the first five innings, including getting at least one runner into scoring position in two of those innings, the Eagles failed to score until the sixth frame when freshman Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) blasted his second home run of the season. The solo shot brought EMU within four, 5-1.

Down 9-1, in the eighth inning, the Eagles showed fight, rallying to score two runs in the frame. Following a pair of walks and a fielder's choice to begin the inning, sophomore Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio.-Bishop Fenwick) roped a two-run single to left field, scoring two and bringing the score within six, 9-3. Kauffman was joined by junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) as the only Eagles to record multiple hits in the contest. EMU added its fourth run in the ninth inning when Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) hit an RBI double to right-center.

Despite its best efforts, the Eagles were unable to break through against YSU pitching, racking up just four runs on six hits en route to the 10-4 loss.

Eastern returns to action when it takes on Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan University in a three-game weekend set, April 3-5, at Robert Bobb Stadium. The series gets underway Friday, April 3, at 3:05 p.m., with games to follow Saturday, May 4, at 1 p.m., and Sunday, May 5, at 1 p.m.
