YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team closed out its three-game weekend series with Bowling Green State University in victorious fashion, riding dominating pitching to claim a 4-0 win Sunday, April 7, at Oestrike Stadium.
Behind its first shutout since blanking Lawrence Tech University, 4-0, last year, April 25, 2018, and first Mid-American Conference shutout since defeating Ball State University 1-0, April 6, 2018, Eastern (7-24-1) picked up its first series win of the year, and first league-series win since taking two-of-three from Northern Illinois University, May 17-19, 2018. Additionally, Eastern picked up its ninth-consecutive series win over the Falcons, a streak that dates back to the 2005 campaign.
On the mound, freshman Justin Meis (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Bethel Park) stole the show with a commanding performance. Coming into the contest, Meis had not pitched more than five innings in an outing, reaching that mark three-times this season in games against NJIT, Incarnate Word, and Northern Illinois. In his series-clinching victory over Bowling Green, the talented right-hander went seven, holding an opponent scoreless for the first time in his collegiate career.
Poised from the start, Meis battled through two early base-runners to get out of the first inning unharmed. Unshaken, the Sunday starter bounced-back with a 1-2-3 second inning.
After two quick outs in the third, Meis faced a challenge when BGSU popped two-consecutive singles to put Falcon runners on first and third. Unwavering, the Pittsburgh, Pa. native battled to force a fly ball out, ending the inning with no runs given up.
Meis cruised through his final four innings, allowing just four hits in the fourth through seventh innings, respectively. The defense behind Meis was stout throughout the contest, as only three Falcon base-runners advanced past second base.
In all, Meis delivered his best performance as an Eagle, tossing seven innings of scoreless baseball with three strikeouts en route to earning his first collegiate win.
While Meis controlled the field, the Eagle offense was busy building run support. After sophomore Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) was hit by a pitch to begin the second inning, classmate Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) blasted a double down the left-field line to give EMU its first scoring chance of the contest. In the ensuing at-bat, sophomore infielder Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock) delivered an RBI with a deep ground-out to short, giving EMU a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Eagles tacked on their second run later in the inning when Kauffman crossed the plate following a passed ball.
Eastern added its third run of the game in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Starting the inning with a single and advancing to second on ground-out, Nate Jones scored when senior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) hit an RBI single up the middle. Although Cruz reached second via his seventh stolen base of the year, EMU was unable to add additional runs in the inning.
Up 3-0 in the bottom of the eight, Eastern tacked on an insurance run when Cruz knocked a sac fly, scoring Jones and giving the Eagles a four run advantage, 4-0. Altogether, the EMU offense tallied seven hits in the contest.
Earning a six-out save, sophomore Holden Cook (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Casady (Murray State)) eliminated any comeback hopes the Falcons had, tossing the eight and ninth innings in dominant fashion for the Green and White. In his two innings of work Cook allowed just two hits and struck-out four BGSU batters, preserving Eastern's first shutout of the season.
Eastern returns to action when it travels to Rochester, Mich. for a single game at Oakland University Wednesday, April 3. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. The Eagles are set to return to Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series at Ball State University, Friday-Sunday in Muncie, Ind, April 12-15
