Baseball Falls to Oakland in High-Scoring Thriller

Eight Eagles combine to notch 13 hits

ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team left Oakland Baseball Field disappointed tonight, April 10, as it dropped a midweek non-conference affair to Oakland University, 10-9, following a walk-off single in the ninth.

A back-and-forth affair, Eastern (7-25-1) fought-off multiple deficits to take the lead twice in the contest. Although it took a one-run lead, 9-8, into the final frame, Eastern was unable to contain the Oakland bats in the ninth, eventually falling, 10-9.

Down 5-0 after two innings, the Eastern offense exploded in the third to tie the game, as all nine hitters stepped to the plate for the Eagles. EMU redshirt sophomore Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) began the inning with a single and advanced to third when junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) laced a one-bagger through the right side in the next at-bat. With runners on first and third and no one out, junior captain Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) delivered Eastern's first RBI of the game, when he singled to center field, cutting the Oakland lead to four, 5-1.

With one out, sophomore Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) kept the rally going, popping an RBI single to left field to give EMU its second run of the inning. After adding its third run via an Oakland wild pitch, Eastern tied the game when freshman Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller) poked a two-RBI single, tying the game, 5-5, in the third.

In total, Eastern racked up five hits en route to a five-run third inning, its most runs in a single inning since it put up a five-run second inning against Concordia University (Mich.) in a single game, played March 27, at Oestrike Stadium.

Unable to score in the fourth inning, EMU's offense took advantage of a scoring opportunity in the fifth to take its first lead of the game, 6-5. Following back-to-back singles to begin the inning, senior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Picking up his second RBI of the contest, Hopkins came through with a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Eastern a 6-5 advantage.

Eastern again found itself trailing, 8-7, entering the seventh inning. Resilient throughout the contest, Eagle hitters battled to reclaim the lead, scoring two runs, to go ahead, 9-8. Following a lead-off walk to begin the inning, Oakland committed two-consecutive errors, the second of which allowed Rensel Jr. to score, tying the game at eight. In the ensuing at-bat, Timko produced an RBI sacrifice fly, which give EMU the lead for the second time in the contest, 9-8.

Despite five Eagles contributing multi-hit games and 13 total hits from the club, Eastern was unable to outpace the Golden Grizzlies in the 10-9 setback.

On the hill, a slew of Eagles saw action. After giving up five runs in the opening frame, freshman Tyler Koons (Flat Rock, Mich.-Gibraltar Carlson) settled in on the bump, tossing scoreless baseball through his final three innings of work. Senior Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern) and sophomore Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) combined to pitch the final five innings for the Green and White.

Although it battled through the end, Oakland's 10 runs on 13 hits proved too much for Eastern to overcome as the Eagles dropped the contest, 10-9.

Eastern returns to action Friday, April 12, for the first installment of a three-game weekend series against Ball State University, in Muncie, Ind. Game one is set to begin at 3 p.m., with games to follow Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m., and Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m.
