GRANZOTTO THE GREAT: After a stellar performance on Friday, April 5, sophomore Scott Granzotto was named the Mid-American Conference's Co-Pitcher of the Week, April 8. Granzotto delivered a dominant performance, leading Eastern in its series-opening win over Bowling Green State University, April 5, in Ypsilanti.
The sophomore lefty tossed a complete game, allowing just one run, six hits, and one walk, while striking out a career high eight Falcon hitters in his effort. Granzotto's wire-to-wire performance is the first complete game performance for Eastern since the 2017 season when Davis Feldman went this distance in a 9-1 victory over Central Michigan University in the MAC Tournament in Avon, Ohio, May 27.
SEARCHING FOR SUCCESS: Coming off its first Mid-American Conference series win of 2019, against Bowling Green State University, April 5-7, the Eagles look to claim consecutive MAC series wins for the first time since defeating Ohio University and Ball State in consecutive series last season. Eastern took two-of-three from Ball State in a weekend set played April 6-8, 2018, before claiming its series against Ohio the following week in Athens, April 13-14.
Additionally, EMU would claim its first MAC road series victory since its trip to Athens with a series win over Ball State.
FIVE AT A TIME: Down 5-0 after two innings of its game against Oakland University, April 10, the Eastern Michigan offense exploded in the third to tie the game, as all nine hitters stepped to the plate for the Eagles in the frame. In total, Eastern racked up five hits en route to a five-run third inning, its most runs in a single inning since it put up a five-run second inning against Concordia University (Mich.) in a single game, played March 27, at Oestrike Stadium.
MULTI-HIT TRIP: When Eastern Michigan battled Oakland in a midweek game, April 10, there was no shortage of offense. Although EMU eventually dropped the contest, 10-9, the Eagles were hot at the plate, knocking 13 total hits on the day, the second highest total of the season.
Most impressive was the balance throughout the lineup, as five players contributed multi-hit games for the Green and White. Freshman Taylor Hopkins, sophomores Jared Kauffman and Shane Easter, and juniors Nick Jones and Zachary Owings, all notched two hits for Eastern in the loss.
EIGHT AT THE PLATE: Scoring nine runs on 13 hits in its loss against Oakland, April 10, the Eastern Michigan offense was productive from top-to-bottom. In additional to five Eagles contributing multi-hit games, EMU saw at least one hit from eight of its nine offensive starters.
.300 CLUB: 33 games into the season, a pair of Eagles have emerged as the club's offensive leaders, as sophomore Jeff Timko and junior Zachary Owings are both hitting north of .300 and out-pacing their best career batting averages.
Owings leads the way with a .356 batting average, a healthy six points over his average from a year ago, when he hit .350 as a sophomore. Timko has found a rhythm in 2019, hitting .333, a major improvement from his redshirt freshman campaign where he hit .244.
Collectively, the duo have accounted for nearly 32 percent of the team's RBIs (41 of 129) and nearly 39 percent of the team's extra-base hits (27 of 70), in 2019.
21 STRONG: Although his team-high 14-game hitting streak came to an end at Miami, March 30, junior Zachary Owings has extended his on-base streak to 21 games after reaching base three times in Eastern's midweek game against Oakland University, April 10.
Owings has posted a .432 batting average (35-for-81), while pounding nine extra-base hits, and driving in 16 during the stretch, dating back to March 9, against Marshall.
TRIPLE TRACKER: While the Eastern offense has been strong in many categories throughout the season, its three-bagging efforts are especially noteworthy, both individually and as a collective unit. EMU ranks 26th nationally in triples this season (fourth in MAC), and has two players ranked in the top-60 individually. Ranking third nationally is Zachary Owings, whose five triples leads the EMU offense and ranks second in the MAC. Jeff Timko, a redshirt sophomore, ranks 55th nationally with three triples on the season, good for fourth in the league.
ALL TIME VS BALL STATE: When Eastern takes the field in Muncie, Ind. for the first game of a three-game conference series against Ball State, April 12, it will do so against a historically tough competitor. In all, the two teams have faced off 156 times, with Eastern holding a 79-75-1 advantage in the series.
In last season's matchup, Eastern took the opening two games of a three-game series, played April 6-8, at Oestrike Stadium. Although it dropped the series finale, 5-0, EMU captured its second of three consecutive MAC series wins with weekend victory.
ON THE HORIZON: Following its trip to Indiana, Eastern play a pair of midweek games in the mitten state, beginning in Ypsilanti with a 3 p.m. game against the University of Dayton, Tuesday, April 16. EMU will head to Michigan State University on Wednesday, April 17 for a night game against the Spartans. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
