YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was unable to build off of its series opening win against Bowling Green State University, dropping game two of its three-game weekend series to the Falcons, 7-4, Saturday, April 6, at Oestrike Stadium.
Despite racking up double-digit hits (10) in the contest, EMU (6-24-1) could not outpace the BGSU offense, who handed EMU its first Mid-American Conference home loss of the season. After establishing an early, 2-1, lead in the second inning, Eastern could not contain the Bowling Green offense, giving up seven runs on 14 hits, to even the weekend series at one apiece.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by a trio of two-hit performances. In the two spot, junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk. Showing his power, Owings popped a double to lead-off the third inning and scored on sophomore Nate Jones' (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) RBI single. Adding a second double in the ninth inning to bring Eastern within three, 7-4, Owings finished his day with two runs scored and an RBI. Jones also knocked two hits in the contest, preceding his RBI single with a first-inning triple. In all, Jones tallied two RBIs on the day, while senior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.- Hamilton (Mesa C.C)) rounded out the multi-hit effortst, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
On the mound, Eastern got production out of multiple players. The best performance of the day came from senior Mitchell Sparks (Willis, Texas-Carmel (Ind.)(Iowa Lakes C.C.)), who came on in relief during the third inning and retired the first two hitters he faced to end the BGSU scoring parade. Staying on for the next four innings, Sparks contained the Falcons, keeping Eastern within striking distance throughout the contest. In total, Sparks tossed 4.2 innings, allowing just four hits, one earned run, and one walk during his effort.
Elsewhere, sophomore Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) was strong on the bump for EMU. Pitching the eighth and ninth innings, the right-hander needed just 26 pitches to limit the Falcons' offense to one hit over the final two frames.
Although Eagle pitching combined to blank the Falcons in their final four frames, the Eastern Michigan bats could not take advantage, failing to score until the ninth inning, where they brought the game within three, 7-4, a score that would go final.
Eastern concludes its three-game weekend series against Bowling Green with a rubber match slated for tomorrow, April 7. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. For the most up-to-date information, go to EMUEagles.com, or follow EMU Baseball on Twitter, at @EMU_Baseball.
