EMU's First Varsity Eight Earns CAA Boat of the Week Honors

The Eagles have earned conference honors for its efforts in all three spring competitions
RICHMOND, Va. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team's First Varsity Eight boat collected the Colonial Athletic Association's Boat of the Week honors, the conference office announced Tuesday, April 30. The award marks the Eagles' third weekly honor this season, as the team has earned the nod for all three of its spring competition efforts.
EMU's First Varsity Eight boat earned first place at the MACRA Championships, Sunday, April 28. In the preliminary heats, the cohort of senior coxswain Christa Maddick (Stockbridge, Mich.-Stockbridge), sophomores Maggie Nied (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) and Carly Szymanski (Toledo, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy), juniors Haley Dutton (West Salem, Wis.-West Salem), Amanda Flora (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central), MacKenzie Geisler (Mount Horeb, Wis.-Mount Horeb), and Ashly Matzek (Ellsworth, Wis.-Ellsworth), and seniors Baylee Kinkade (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and Addison Oblanas (Seattle, Wash.-Seattle Academy) finished 20 seconds ahead of the field of competition with a time of 6:18.10, securing a spot in the afternoon's Grand Final.
The squad ended their day with the top finish in the J. Clark Wray Cup, recording a time of 6:17.70. The Green and White finished 15 seconds before the second-place boat from Drake University while also cutting almost half a second off its morning effort. Furthermore, Sunday's performance by the First Varsity Eight also improved on EMU's 2017 first-place performance by more than 35 seconds.
EMU takes a week off from competition before once again hits the water, competing at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Penn. May 10-11. The regatta will mark the Eagles' last regular season effort before the CAA Championships, May 19.
