Sutton, McKelvey, and Andrews round out Eagles' 10-member 2019-2020 class

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University Head Rowing Coach Kemp Savage announced the additions of Rose Andrews (Rochester, Ill.-Rochester), Theresa McKelvey (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Huron), and signing of Ariel Sutton (Indianapolis, Ind.-Scecina Memorial) to his 2019-2020 squad Tuesday, April 23. Andrews, McKelvey, and Sutton join Chloe Hinojosa (Kewanee, Ill.-Kewanee), Gena Remsing (Vermontville, Mich.-Maple Valley), Kaia Knox (Carmel, Indiana-Carmel), Alexis Kettler (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton), Lena McCaslin (Hendersonville, Tenn.-Pope John Paul II), Claire McCurley (Harrison, Ohio-William Henry Harrison), and Emma Boersen (West Olive, Mich.-Grand Haven) as the newest additions to the Green and White for the 2019-2020 campaign.

Andrews comes to Ypsilanti as a two-year letterwinner for the Rochester High School tennis team, located in Rochester, Mich. The Mitten State native held a 20-5 individual set record in her senior campaign as the Rockets posted a nearly flawless 13-3 match mark in the 2018-19 season. For her efforts, Andrews earned distinction as an Academic All-Conference selection while additionally earning the team's honor as its Most Dedicated player.

When asked about why she chose Eastern Michigan, Andrews details the school's unique major offerings as a key determinant for her overall decision. "I chose EMU because I liked the overall atmosphere of the campus and the people," Andrews noted. "I also have a somewhat specific major, so it was important to me to find the right fit. A special opportunity I received from EMU is joining the rowing team. I am excited to learn and experience a lot of new things while continuing my academic and athletic career."

"Rose looks to be another great addition to our group of talented transfer athletes to boost our novice team," remarked Savage of Sutton's commitment to the Eagles.

Originally from down Washtenaw Ave., McKelvey joins EMU after two seasons as the Ann Arbor Huron High School's rowing team captain. Under Kerry O'Neil and Mike Taft, McKelvey saw success from the beginning of her career, earning distinctions as the team's novice leader, and receiving the Golden Oar award in her first season with the River Rats. Her second campaign saw the Ann Arbor, Mich. native recognized for her stellar attendance at practices, collecting the award for the most helpful and knowledgable team member.

"I really love the layout of the campus, and it's close to home," noted McKelvey when asked about the reasons she chose Eastern Michigan. "Also, the coaching staff here is a good fit for me. I feel like I have connected with them and I feel like they will push me to be a great athlete."

"Theresa rows for one of the area's top high schools- she will bring her rowing experience to our Freshman Class and be a source of information to the talented transfer athletes on the novice team," said Savage of his excitement about the addition of McKelvey.

Lastly, hailing from Indianapolis, Ind., Sutton joining the Eagles after prepping at Scecina Memorial High School. Sutton earned four letters as a member of the Crusaders' Basketball Team, spending three years as captain of the team. She averaged 12.7 points per game, eight rebounds, and boasted a 72 percent free throw percentage in her senior campaign, earning honors such as All-City Honorable Mention and Conference Honorable Mention for her efforts. Sutton also was a member of the Crusaders' tennis, track and field, and soccer programs throughout her high school athletic career.

"Eastern Michigan became an easy choice because it felt like a second home to me," Sutton noted on her decision to become an Eagle. "The students were welcoming and the campus is beautiful.  I am excited to join the rowing team and to begin my studies."

"Ariel, like all of our talented transfer athletes, impressed us with her toughness and athletic background," noted  Savage. "She is going to be a great addition to what is already one of our fastest incoming classes ever."

EMU continues on in its spring competition scheduling, next competing in the MACRA Championships in Grand Rapids, Mich. Sunday, April 28. For more information on the Eagles, visit the Eagles' Rowing page at EMUEagles.com or follow the team on twitter @EMURowing.
