NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Firing the fourth-lowest round in program history at 291, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team surged five spots in the final round to finish tied with Ball State University for fourth at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Championship with a three-day cumulative score of 923 (324-308-291). Kent State University captured the tournament title, finishing at seven-under par 857 (305-278-274) on the par-72, 6,025 yard Purgatory Golf Club course.
Overall it was a very successful weekend for the Eagles, as EMU's final round score is tied for fourth all-time in EMU laurels. The round of three-over was the best by an Eastern Michigan squad since posting a two-over 290 during the closing round of the 2016 MAC Championships, April 24, 2016. Furthermore, it was the squad's best conference showing since that 2016 campaign when it also placed fourth in the 10 team field.
Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Stephanie Jennings, Eastern finished with the 13th lowest four-player team scoring average in program history at 312.0. Overall, EMU finished in the top-five at four different tournaments this season.
The No. 10 ranked Golden Flashes continued to make history at the tournament, as KSU captured its 21st consecutive league championship. Kent State entered the day trailing the University of Toledo by two strokes, but quickly flipped the script on the tournament's final day with a final round of 14-under to finish at 860. The Golden Flashes were followed by Toledo (875) and Northern Illinois (896). Eastern Michigan (923), Ball State (923), Akron (924), Ohio (927), Bowling Green (928), Western Michigan (938), and Central Michigan (965) rounded out the team standings.
The weather vastly improved for the final 36 holes after Saturday's round was postponed due to unplayable course conditions. With improved scoring conditions, sophomore Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) and junior Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) tied for 19th-place with a 228. Sripatrprasite closed with a final round 71 to become the first Eagle since 2016 to post a round below-par at the MAC Championships, while Connelly closed with an even-par 72.
Freshman Green Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) totalled a 234 (83-78-73) to tie for 28th, while junior Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford) added a 237 (82-80-75) in 34th. Rounding out the EMU lineup, junior Katelin Lawson (LaSalle, Ontario-Ridge Community-Tampa) added a 243 (81-78-84) tied for 41st.
2019 MAC Golfer of the Year and All-MAC First Team recipient Karoline Stormo of Kent State shot a seven-under 65 in the second round to post herself at the top of the leaderboard throughout the final day and eventually capture the individual title with a score of 211 (76-65-70). The second round score broke the record for the lowest 18 hole round in MAC Championship history.
Toledo's Saranlak Tumfong finished as runner-up in the tournament, shooting a 69 (-3) in the final round.
Stormo was joined on the first team by teammates Michaela Finn and Pimnipa Panthong, and Chloe Salort. Pinyada Kuvanun of Toledo also earned a spot on the first team after a strong senior season. The All-MAC Second Team is composed of Pimchanok Kawil of Toledo, Danielle Nicholson from Akron, 2019 Freshman of the Year Thitapa Pakdeesetakul, Kory Nielsen, as well as Brielle Ward and Lauren from Northern Illinois.
The 2019 Sportswoman of the Year was awarded to Erin Fahey of Bowling Green for her positive rapport with competitors and fellow teammates throughout the year.
