Eagles have now earned two of the three total weekly awards given during the 2019 season
RICHMOND, Va. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team's First Varsity Eight boat was once again named the Colonial Athletic Association's Boat of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday, April 16. This is the Eagles' second weekly honor this season, now claiming two of the three total weekly awards handed out by the CAA so far in 2019.
The Varsity Eight continued its success from the Cooper Invite with a second-place finish in the A Final of the Mason Invitational, April 14. The CAA's top-finishing boat was made up of seniors Christa Maddick (Stockbridge, Mich.-Stockbridge), Addison Oblanas (Seattle, Wash.-Seattle Academy), Haley Dutton (West Salem, Wis.-West Salem), and Baylee Kinkade (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central), juniors Amanda Flora (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central) and MacKenzie Geisler (Mount Horeb, Wis.-Mount Horeb), sophomores Maggie Nied (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) and Carly Szymanski (Toledo, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy), and freshman Priscilla Brom (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford).
The Green and White started the day with a top finish in the First Varsity Eight preliminary heat competition against CAA foes Villanova University and the University of Delaware, topping both teams by almost 10 seconds with a 2000m time of 6:36.60. The team's efforts qualified them for the A Final against the University of Kansas and St. Joseph's University, where the Eagles finished second with a time of 6:41.61, just seven seconds behind KU. EMU's efforts helped lead the CAA to the conference victory at the Mason Invitational, besting the Big 12 Conference by one point.
EMU takes a week's break from competition, next hitting the water for the MACRA Championships Sunday, April 28, in Grand Rapids, Mich. To keep up-to-date with all things Eastern Michigan University rowing, follow the team on Twitter @EMURowing.
